I've played HoN ~ many people at my school play it as well. I like DotA better because it is more original, but I will not say HoN is bad, because it is a good game with good graphics, just you need decent-good specs on your comp to run it.

Below are the minimum and recommended system specifications to run Heroes of Newerth.
We strongly advise players to use components closer to the recommended system requirements. While the game will function with these minimum requirements it will have significantly poorer performance than the recommended requirements.
Windows
Minimum:
Processor - 2.2GHz Pentium 4 / AMD 2400+ or faster
RAM - 1GB of RAM
Video Card - GeForce 5 and ATI 9800 w/ 128 MB VRAM
Windows XP, Win2k or Windows Vista
Network Connection Required
Recommended:
Processor - 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo / AMD 3500+ or faster

Dxdiag people......
Do the following:
1. Start => Run => Type in "dxdiag"
2. Choose "Yes"
3. Click on the "Display" Tab and turn on all Accelerations
4. Click on the "Sound" Tab and move to full acceleration.
From this you will be able to check you Processor(Type,Speed,Bus), your Graphics accelerations(Video Card name, speed, memory capacity, drivers) and you Sound accelerations(drivers).
